Melvin Herbert King (1928–2023) was a prominent American politician, community organizer, and educator from Boston, known for his significant contributions to social justice and community development. He served as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1973 to 1983 and was the first Black candidate to reach the general election for mayor of Boston in 1983, where he garnered substantial support from the African American community. King was a lifelong advocate for low-income residents, founding the South End Technology Center and the Rainbow Coalition, and he held a position as Senior Lecturer Emeritus at MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning.
